If you can close your eyes and conjure up Game of Thrones’ most memorable images—Catelyn Stark with a knife at her throat at the Red Wedding, Cersei Lannister being marched nude through the streets of King’s Landing, or Jaime making a desperate charge at Daenerys and her dragon—you have Robert McLachlan to thank. Since 2013, McLachlan has worked on Game of Thrones as a cinematographer—the person tasked with crafting the overall visual design of a film or TV show, overseeing everything from the movement of the camera to the lighting of a scene, with the overall goal of conveying the story to maximum technical and artistic effect.
